In this detailed history of the 76th NY volunteers, A.P. Smith provides a dramatic account of that regiment's service in the American Civil War. At Fredricksburg, South Mountain, Gettysburg, Spottslyvania, Chancellorsville, and 20 other violent clashes, the 76th distinguished itself. What's unusual about this regimental history is the controversy that surrounded its author. Abram Smith did not complete his service with the 76th but he was later tasked with writing its history. He gives a good account of the regiment based on documents and letters from the members. Also in this volume are biographical sketches of the regiment's officers, including General Abner Doubleday. The regiment's only execution of one of its members is narrated, as well as the battles themselves.
