A careful reading of soldier memoirs of the American Civil War can reveal indications of what we today call Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In a rare talk given in 1905, famed physician, Silas Weir Mitchell (who had served as a doctor in the Civil War) mentions his intense interest in "nervous diseases." Though short, this paper is one of the few that mention PTSD in the Civil War. This edition also references other medical memoirs from the Civil War. It is interesting to note that at the time, combat injuries to nerves and psychological damage due to combat stress were considered as similar diagnoses.
