As a test, he asks them how much they love him. Two daughters pay him faux-overtures to caress his ego, whereas the third, Cordelia, is truthful and admits that she cannot express her love in words. Lear, hurt and enraged, disinherits her, sparking a chain of events which make the old king come to question his decisions, which cause chaos and conflict in their wake.
