His daredevil yet wholly believable exploits later lead to him being instructed by Churchill to secretly capture a U-boat at sea so as to gain access to its uprated Enigma machine and codes, thus bringing to an end the 'Great Blackout' which is allowing the Germans to decimate shipping in the Atlantic.
