黄金荣，自幼就喜欢与地痞流氓交往，后来，考入上海法租界老北门麦兰巡捕房当探员。他用"贼喊捉贼"的办法提高了自己在租界的威信，后升至督察长。他走私鸦片、开设赌台，牟取巨额利润。他还涉足娱乐业，进入金融界、工商界，在上海滩叱咤风云。解放后，势力渐弱的黄金荣留在了上海。1951年5月20日，他发表《自白书》，表示要"洗清个人历史上的污点，重新做人"，最后，老死家中，他的一生可谓大起大落、千回百转、坏事做绝，却能怡养天年，不能不说是一个传奇。(Huang Jinrong used to play with spalpeens in his childhood. He was admitted to act as a detective in police station of Old North Gate Gamelan in Shanghai French Concession. He raised his reputation the concession authority by" A robber acts like a cop" and was promoted the Inspector General afterwards. He smuggled opium and opened gambling to reap huge profits. Involved in the entertainment, finance and commerce and industry business, he commanded Shanghai. After the liberation, he stayed in Shanghai with descending power. On May 20th, 1951, he published "Confession" and said to "wash personal stain in the history and turn to new person". Finally he died at home. His life changed so radically, twisted and turned and committed every evil, but he lived happily, which had to be regarded as a legend.)
