Set in the midst of the refugee crisis, this timely dark thriller proves "another epitychia (success) in this Greek mystery series" (Kirkus Reviews).

While visting the island of Sifnos, Greek American ceramicist Lydia Pappas stumbles upon a child's body in the ruins of an ancient temple. The boy, likely a refugee, has been ritualistically murdered, though the crime scene leaves investigator Yiannis Patronas with few clues. The inhabitants at the refugee camp, mistrustful of the police, are little help either. With a reduced police force due to Greece's financial crisis, Patronas must rely on Papa Michalis, an eccentric Orthodox priest and mystery fiction buff.

As multiple suspects come to light, Patronas and Michalis must decide if the killer is a Greek national, foreign migrant, or someone else determined to revive the religious rituals of ancient Greece. "Serafim grounds her tale in Greek history, ancient and present, and provides a brutal and effective resolution to the case that will surprise most readers" (Publishers Weekly).
