The House of Mirth tells the story of Lily Bart, a well-born member of New York Society who falls from grace. Born into privilege, Lily does not have the income to support her lifestyle without marrying well but when faced with the choice between security and romance, Lily chooses to turn down an almost certain offer of financial freedom in the hope of a proposal from another with disastrous consequences.
