The PLAAF was founded in 1949, shortly after the declaration of the People's Republic of China. But air combat in China has a much longer history, reaching back to the pre-revolutionary era. The Communist Party of China (CPC) first started training pilots with Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) forces, and with the Soviets, in the 1920s. During World War II, with the Nationalists and the CPC cooperating to fight the Japanese, Communist troops again trained with and flew alongside KMT fliers.
