(Xin Qiji (1140-1207), courtesy name You’an, self-titled Jiaxuan, was from Licheng City (Jinan of Shandong nowadays). When he was born, Shandong had already been occupied by the Jin army. He joined the rebel army at twenty-one years of age and soon returned to the Southern Song, where he had been appointed as the Pacification Commissioner of Hubei, Jiangxi, Hunan, Fujian and East Zhejiang successively. During his tenure, he took active measures to call back the exiled people, train the army, reward the farming and war fairs, strike against the corruption and despotic gentry, and made efforts to stabilize the people's livelihood. He strongly held the opinion for fighting the Jin army. The lyrics written by him expressed his patriotism for a re-united nation, his grief and indignation for the unrealized aspiration, and exposure and criticism to the humiliating surrender of the Southern Song Dynasty’s ruling group; there were also many lyrics eulogizing the mountains and rivers of the motherland. His works have various art styles, with the majority in the Unconstrained School. With his ebullience, heroic and powerful writings, together with Su Shi, Xin Qiji has been called “Su and Xin”.)
