New York City's Lower East Side was once the most densely populated place on earth. It is an ever-changing neighborhood built upon waves of immigration. From the German and Irish to Eastern European and Jewish immigrants to the expanding borders of Chinatown today, the Lower East Side continues to transform before our eyes.
The tour begin at Straus Square on the corner of East Broadway and Essex streets.
Stops include:
* The New York City Tenement Museum
* Shtiebel Row, storefront synagogues of immigrant Jews
* Eldridge Street Synagogue
* The Daily Forward building
* The Bialystoker Synagogue
* The Henry Street Settlement
* Seward Park Library
* A traditional bialy bakery and a traditional pickle shop
Lower East Side: A Tradition of Immigration consists of about 35 minutes of material and takes less than 90 minutes to complete (unless, of course, you take a few minutes to stop for a bialy or a pickle).
Note: Many shops in this neighborhood are closed on Saturday.
