The words of Christ can indeed seem confusing to the uninitiated mind, to him who thinks only as the world thinks, as a selfish man has come to view life. For the world tells us to look out for number one and get all the money and power we can amass—this is the way to win the race. And so those who have not had a change of heart, those who have not put on the mind of Christ—how can they understand the teaching that "The last shall be first" or that "One must die to live"? It will seem utterly confusing. How can the last be first or death bring life? This Jesus is contradicting himself! Then, when one manages to delve into what Christ means and begins to comprehend what he intends to say, confusion readily turns to repulsion for the worldly soul. He wants me to humble myself, to take the last place, to think of others more than myself? He must be nuts! And when the pièce de résistance comes, "Love your enemy," the worldly soul balks. Love my enemy? I hate my enemy and all he stands for—I have no sympathy for that bum at all. I'm not gonna pray for him or give him my coat or turn the other cheek. Now I know this Jesus really is nuts! And so it goes. But what of those who recognize the wisdom (and love) in Christ's words? What of those who wish to immerse themselves as deeply as possible in his grace? This book is for souls such as these.
