Explore how the special gifts of the Spirit, used as normative signs of the saving presence of the Spirit, take a backseat to love (1 Corinthians 13:1-3). Why is this point important? The special gifts of the Spirit, tongues and knowledge and prophecy, cease when Scripture is complete (1 Corinthians 13:8-12). Yes, love, as defined and described in Scripture, is the "more excellent way" (1 Corinthians 12:31). Love is the greatest of all Christian virtues (1 Corinthians 13:13).
Therefore, this study examines Paul's description of love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7) to show us how to live a life of love as defined in Scripture (1 John 5:3, 2 John 6) and empowered by the Holy Spirit (Ezekiel 36:27). When this trinity, love described by Paul, love defined by Scripture, and love empowered by the Holy Spirit, is brought to bear on us, we experience true Christian affections. The result is a testimony to both the power and love of God (1 John 4:12).
