Can a rebellious 15-year-old girl and her 60-something strict aunt learn from each other—and learn to at least respect each other in the process? The struggle of wills between a young girl and an elderly woman is the story of Running Over Rainbows, set in 5th-century Britannia.
Caylith is Marrie's guest for six months trying to learn about manners, money and proper marriage, all the while she is festering to be free of the linen-storage room where her aunt keeps her busy counting supper towels. Caylith feels that she and her best friend Brindl are being kept "imprisoned" in a large Roman manor, all the while her elderly aunt is outdoors where the spirited teenager longs to be. Unknown to either girl, Aunt Marrie has taken in a small herd of wild mountain ponies and has set herself to training a pretty white mare.
Caylith cannot be held captive for too long. Soon she discovers one of her aunt's long-held secrets lying in a forbidden room, and she finds out what her aunt is doing on the back pasture where none can see her.
On Christmas Eve, Aunt Marrie's pony disappears in a snowstorm. Caylith, the main attraction at Marrie's formal dinner, also disappears. Can two red-headed hellions forgive the past to save the day?
