In his treatise On Airs, Waters, and Places, Hippocrates discusses the effects of different environments on human health. He observes that certain climatic conditions are conducive to good health, while others lead to illness. For example, he notes that people who live in hot, dry climates tend to be healthy and have few diseases, while those who live in cold, wet climates are more susceptible to illness.
