《列那狐的故事》，顾名思义，是一本动物故事书。在这个动物世界里，弱者常为强肉，愚者常为智役，而惹是生非、闹得鸡犬不宁的乱臣贼子，是只狡黠的狐狸。这只列那狐既可爱亦可恼，他自恃聪敏，喜欢略施小计，免不了欺凌弱小，不过也敢于对付强敌，甚至戏弄不可一世的狮王。但他也有失算的时候，如遇到比他还机敏的猫伯伯便眼睁睁吃了亏。书中所写，飞禽走兽皆有人情，狐狼兔羊亦通世故。这里也有贪财徇私的国王，片言折狱的廷审，远行请罪的朝圣......故事出于兽域，情形不异人间。列那狐的故事，最初流传于十二三世纪的法国民间，不乏新兴市民阶层的谐趣嘲谑与民间智慧，所以这个动物世界，多少带点儿当时中世纪人间社会的写照。(The Story of Reynard, just as its name implies, is an animal storybook.
