I'm living the normal, boring life of a more or less average American teenage guy. I live with my grandparents in a little two-bedroom house in a bedroom community not too far from Los Angeles. My parents are dead, courtesy of an uninsured, drunk driver. Since the drunk driver had no insurance, I have no real money. Social Security provides me a small monthly income, that I use to pay my grandparents for my room and board. However, the Social Security money will cease, when I turn 18-years-old. I have no clue as to what I'll do when I turn 18-years-old. What I'm supposedly learning in school aint gonna get me any kind of a real job.
Then, the voice in my head starts just after my 14th birthday. The voice is that of Tloavakh. Tloavakh gives me commands and I have no choice but to obey the commands that Tloavakh gives me.
The commands involve my training my body and mind to an unbelievable degree. I do some sort of training in unarmed combat. I don't know what the unarmed combat system is called, but it's as far above Kung-Fu as Kung-Fu is above the fighting ability of the usual, more or less untrained, teenage guy.
The mental training concentrates mainly on mathematics, but also allows me to scan and analyze information very rapidly and very accurately.
All of the training is exhausting. The physical training consists of movements within the unarmed combat system. I move from one posture to another. The movements are accompanied by breathing exercises and mental exercises, in my mind. The combination of mental and physical training makes me into a lightning quick, silk smooth killer who can defeat larger, stronger opponents with quick efficiency. The training builds physical muscle and mental states that will allow me to kill without conscious thought or regret. After some time, I begin to wonder exactly what it is that Tloavakh is training me for. I'm unable to come with an answer.
Tloavakh pushes me from the time I first began to hear the voice inside my head until near the end of my senior year in high school. During the entire process, I still have no idea why I'm being trained or for what purpose I'm being trained.
In the late spring of my senior year in high school, Tloavakh finally appears.
Tloavakh is a tall, strong looking being. He stands perhaps six and a half feet tall and probably weighs about 250 very muscular pounds. He might have passed for a man in dim light; very dim light. Tloavakh has rough skin with a sort of mottled pattern of dark spots on a light gray background. He has a broad, flat nose, deep set dark eyes and no hair at all. The dark dots are neatly merged into a sort of skullcap pattern on the top of his head, where a man would have had hair.
Tloavakh meets me one Friday night. The first thing he wants to do is fight. We have a contest rules fight, in the dark shadows under a large tree in a nearby vacant lot. I'm good. Tloavakh is a little bit better, but only a little better.
Tloavakh seems pleased that he can beat me, if only by the thinnest of margins. He then finally talks to me about the reasons behind my training.
Tloavakh had been captured by enemies. He had been confined in a sort of prison, for several years. He had been forced to work for his captors. Tloavakh had managed to modify some of the equipment with which his captors had provided him. The equipment had allowed him to communicate with me, over a long distance. and to use the communication to set up what Tloavakh calls an operation.
What Tloavakh wants to do is to obtain a saucer craft that's currently in the possession of the United States government. He'll need my help...
