Eleven-year-old Maddy must keep herself and her three younger brothers afloat in early 1960s segregated Mississippi during her mother's sudden absence following a family crisis—and despite harrowing circumstances and increasing neglect from her combat veteran father, she is able to find strength, wisdom, and, eventually, hope for the future.
