Angelo Gyp DeCarlo was an influential mafia figure who rose to the position of captain in the Genovese crime family. He was implicated in the murder of Newark insurance broker Louis Saperstein, who died of arsenic poisoning in 1968. Saperstein found himself heavily in debt to the mob and no longer able to pay the needed $5,000 in interest that he owed weekly. DeCarlo manipulated the selection of state officers like the highway patrol head and others. He did so by influencing the mayor of Newark and other elected officials who became pawns in his hands.
