Ziel des Dialogs Idiota de mente (1450) ist die Zusammenführung der aristotelischen Bestimmung des Intellekts als Formprinzip des Lebens mit der platonisch-augustinischen Idee von der Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Für Cusanus ist die mens (Geist) eine eigene lebendige Substanz: Sie ist für sich selbst seiende Seele als Einheit ihrer Kräfte und das Bild Gottes.
