Told in a series of flashbacks, The Good Soldier focuses on two seemingly happy couples and their friendship with one another, slowly unraveling this illusion and revealing the problems bubbling under the surface – infidelity, deception, and bitterness about throughout. Lies are slowly exposed and truths revealed, as the narrator (one of the men) slowly pieces together what the story of the last five years of his life.
 
The novel is widely regarded as one of the best of the 20th century, and is noted for its deft use of modern literary techniques such as the unreliable narrator.
