In his second novel appearance, private investigator Philip Marlowe has to juggle the case of a missing necklace, and the case of a dead nightclub owner, and to try and discover how the two crimes are connected. It has been adapted for film twice, with Robert Mitchum and Dick Powell as Marlowe, and the plot was used for the film The Falcon Takes Over.
