A woman from London finds that the only recourse left to her after becoming widowed and being pregnant and living in a poorhouse, is to seek a mail order husband. She finds herself on board ship and sick from both morning and seasickness, and heading towards a man whose only requirement is that she helps him with the farm chores; until he sees her, that is.
