"The Women of Brewster Place" by Gloria Naylor was first published in 1982. It was her debut novel. It was a highly successful book, acclaimed by both critics and authors of the time.

The book was the winner of the National Book Award in the category of First Novel. It was also adapted into a movie in 1989, and then in the year 1990 it was made into a television show that was produced by Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Productions.

The book very thoroughly investigates the lives of both men and women in an urban setting. It also explores relationships, including homosexual relationships. The author also deals with the theme of romantic love that is associated to friendship.
