When orphaned Mary Lennox comes to live at her uncle's great house, Misselthwaite Manor, on the Yorkshire moors, she finds it full of secrets. At first she is cold and angry but then she slowly starts to make friends – with Colin, who has been told he will never walk again, with Martha, the parlourmaid, and with Dickon, a boy who can talk to animals. Then one day Mary discovers a secret garden, walled and locked, which has been completely forgotten for years and years. Mary slowly brings the garden back to life – and in doing so solves the mystery of Misselthwaite Manor.
