Everett's estranged father just died in battle, leaving him without any family, or so he thinks. That is until a soldier delivers a letter his father had written to him. With the letter comes a small fortune and a request that Everett seek out his uncle who lives in the Southern Plains. Though Everett is unsure if he wants to follow through with his father's last wish, he has always hoped to make the long journey south and escape a childhood riddled with troubled memories, and so he at least welcomes the idea of going south never to return to Khyrah. But as time passes, the mystery of this lost uncle and why he fled his family to such a distant place pulls Everett into a chase that pushes him further south than most people have ever been.
