(The School of Asian and African Studies (originally known as Department of Asian and African Languages), of Beijing Foreign Studies University, was built in 1961. The school teaches 16 languages including Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, Burmese, Tai, Malay, Indonesian, Sinhalese, Korean, Turkish, Swahili, Hausa, Hindi, Urdu, Hebrew, and Persian. This school is one of the domestic colleges or departments which have the widest range of foreign languages and the longest history. In 2001, approved by the Ministry of Education, the Department of Asian and African Languages established a base to train undergraduates majoring in non-common foreign languages, and became a member of "the Higher Education Reform Project in the 21st Century". Besides, in 2007 and 2008, this school got approval respectively from Ministry of Education and the city of Beijing and became a higher education base for special majors. In 2011, while Beijing Foreign Studies University was celebrating its 70th anniversary, the School of Asian and African Studies commemorated its 50th one. In this special year, we edited and published this essay album for the school's 50th anniversary, by looking back to the unforgettable development of Beijing Foreign Studies University and the School of Asian and African Studies, summing up our experience, looking forward to our future, joining our forces, and discussing our development, in order to improve our ability to educate students. In the past 50 years of development, the school has adhered to the good traditions of Beijing Foreign Studies University in foreign languages teaching and researching, and has educated generations of talents for non-common Asian and African languages, and has contributed to the exchange at all levels between China and other Asian and African countries. With the aim of basing us on our traditions so as to forge ahead, this essay album includes not only senior teachers' touching recollection of the school's development but also young teachers' discussion about teaching and research and their expectation of the school's future."Shuren, Zhizhi, Huaiyuan(Education, Knowledge, and Achievement)", these three words can show how this school has developed. In academics, we started from scratch and have worked hard to pursue knowledge as much as possible and educated students for 50 years; the word "Huaiyuan" (Achievement) does not mean that we are missing someone far away as it always implies in ancient poems; instead, it means our concern about Asia and Africa, our tranquil mind and our determination to realise our goals.)
