La vida del escudero Marcos de Obregón is more an adventure story than a picaresque work. His style moves away from the bombast of other works of the genre. The story is set in very different places (one scene features a captivity in Algeria). Espinel reflects on the lives of a class in decline in Spain at the time: the Christians of Islamic origin. The story also contains fascinating scenes concerning musical practices used in the Spanish court.
