Four acclaimed architects discussed in this book, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van de Rohe, LE Corbusier and Walter Gropius, made considerable contributions to the development of modern architecture. Although their architecture is considered to be similar to that of modern architecture, they were separated by surroundings and circumstances different from those of other famous personalities. These factors laid an important foundation for the formation of ideas and architectural approaches that are so distinct that a personal and unique identity evolved in the development history of modern architecture. The contributions of these four architects cannot be denied. This is based on the hundreds of buildings constructed, among which some were considered as masterpieces which were frequently referred and studied by architectural students throughout the world. Thus, it is not surprising that their ideas and thoughts have had tremendous influence on the younger generations after them. This book was written with the purpose of enabling students or anyone interested in architecture to learn about these famous personalities. The discussions focus on their backgrounds, early education, brief discussions on the important work forming part of the chain of buildings they constructed, followed by their brief biographies, list of their buildings and projects to facilitate students' understanding. Finally, I would like to thank all parties who have had a hand in completing this book especially the staff of the School of Housing, Building and Planning who contributed their energy in preparing the early manuscript of this book, the Centre for Languages and Translation who checked the final manuscript, the editor and staff of Universiti Sains Malaysia Press and friends who gave me the inspiration and encouragement to complete this book. I would also like to record my appreciation for the academic assessor who reviewed, gave comments and recommendations during preparation of the final draft of this book. My heartfelt thanks also to all those involved directly or indirectly in preparing this book.
