The book is a compilation of essays written by lecturers and postgraduate students of literature. The variety of fields and literature studies manifested in these writings are actually bound by a single theme, that is the relationship between literature and culture as well as literature and media. Studies in literature have never been confined solely to its own sphere. Literature is not merely a story; it expresses a myriad of issues relating to past culture as well as the current culture of society. Issues relating to mankind, society, tradition, heritage etc. are the regular materials for literature whether traditional or modern. Moreover, in this modern age, literature has adapted to the media as literary works are now available as e-literature, digital literature, cyber literature and many other forms. This book analyses the issues of court and rural culture in traditional Malay literature which covers the written and oral literature. Issues about modern and contemporary society are also focused on through studies on novels, short stories and poems. Writings that extend to the international dimension have also received the writer's attention. International culture is portrayed through the works of writers from abroad. It is presented through comparisons of and western perceptions of the east. Meanwhile, the relationship between literature and media reveals that literary works that have been made into films and also works published digitally in cyberspace. Writers have shown the changes that happen when a work is adapted and the new forms of literature emerging in the digital era. In fact, this book seeks to prove that literature is actually very closely related to the society and constantly meets the current needs.
