This collection of short crime-fiction stories leads readers on a journey over both land and sea to get to the heart of each murder in turn. The assortment includes four short stories ('A Date for a Murder', 'Intruder', 'Pressure', and 'Leaving Cakes') and the opening chapters of Marshall's upcoming novel, Ferine.

'A Date for a Murder' follows Tobe as he finds himself wrapped up in the mystery of an editor's death. However, not all is as it may seem, as readers are treated to a clever plot twist to satisfy their craving for mystery.

'Intruder' thrusts readers right into the action from the start, as they are faced with a woman lying dead on the floor whilst an unknown brute of a man searched the house; meanwhile the protagonist is trying desperately to escape the brute's clutches.

'Pressure' plunges the reader into the depths of an underwater turmoil; confined to a wrecked submarine, they soon discover the depths to which humans will sink when faced with disaster.

'Leaving Cakes' rounds off the collection nicely, as it follows DI Harry Hardcastle on his last day at work, investigating a suicide. After a clever investigation which wraps up the case, readers get to find out the events leading up to the real mystery in 'A Date for a Murder'.

Marshall writes with great flair, skilfully building suspense whilst managing to keep the plot moving at a decent pace. He has a talent for creating drama, and readers will delight in the many plot twists he produces to keep them on their toes.
