Perhaps no other heavyweight fight elevated the common man as a boxing fan than the Baer-Carnera title bout of June 1935. Braddock had fought on the undercard of the Carnera-Baer heavyweight championship fight in June 1933. Just two years later he was fighting to become world champion. Small bettors were singled out in this event for placing the largest wagers behind the contender. Of the approximate $100,000 bet altogether most of the working man's money went on James Walter Braddock. The split among the betting money was 80% Baer, 20% Braddock.
