"The Sound of Waves" by Yukio Mishima was first published in 1954. Shinji is the protagonist of the novel.
It is a coming-of-age novel that describes Shinji's development into a mature person and his romance with Hatsue who happens to be the daughter of a rich ship owner Terukichi.
Shinchosha Publishing awarded the Shincho Prize to the author for "The Sound of Waves" in the year of its publication. The book has been made into movie at five different times.
It is said that the author had visited Greece to study its culture. He is said to have appreciated the harmonious balance between intellect and flesh evinced by the Greeks. "The Sound of Waves" presents the aura of gentle affection and endearing innocence.
