This novel depicts the difficulties faced by a village lad who comes to the city in search of a career and how he copes up with this new world. It is written from the perspective of the lad himself. Author Shankaranarayan, who portrayed life at the village level in his first two novels, now masterfully captures all the expressions and experiences of city life. The way he describes and differentiates between the attitudes of lads from the city and those from the village is awesome. This village lad is stunned by the change from his home in the village to living in an apartment. He sleeps on a berth, mingles with the crowds, and even travels on the footboard of a bus. Very poetically the author Shankaranarayan says, "The Crow caws for a new guest, but for which flat?" (கிராமத்தில் இருந்து வேலை தேடி நகரம் புகும் இளைஞன் எங்ஙனம் நகர வாழ்க்கையோடு ஒத்திசைய முடியாமல் தடுமாறுகிறான். பிறகு அதற்குப் பழகிக்கொண்டு தானும் வேகமெடுக்கிறான் என்பதை ஓர் இளைஞனின் பார்வையாக சுவாரஸ்யமாக விவரித்துச் செல்கிறது நாவல். முதல் இரண்டு நாவல்களையும் கிராமத்து வியூங்களுடன் அமைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்த ஷங்கரநாராயணன் இந்நாவலில் பட்டணத்தின் சாயல்களை அடையாளம் கொண்டுவருகிறார். கிராமத்து இளைஞனுக்கும் பட்டணத்து இளைஞனுக்குமான மாறுபாடுகளை இத்தனை தெளிவாக அவர் விளக்கி வரைவது அழகு. தனித் தனி வீடுகள் என்கிற கிராமத்து பாரம்பரியத்தில் இருந்து அடுக்கு வீடுகளான அமைப்பு, அடுக்குப் படுக்கைகளில் (பெர்த்) உறங்குதல் போன்ற புதிய வாழ்க்கை முறைகளை கிராமத்து இளைஞன் சந்திக்கிறான். இந்தே வேகமான வாழ்க்கையைக் கண்டு முதலில் திகைத்தாலும், ஓடும் பஸ்சில் தொற்றியேறும் சனத்தோடு அவனும் கலந்துவிடுகிறான். ஷங்கரநாராயணன் நாவலாக எழுதும் ஒரு சிறு கவிதை – மொட்டை மாடியில் கரையும் காகம் எந்த ஃபிளாட் விருந்தாளிக்காக?)
