Far from the yawn of so much travel-inspired poetry, L'Abbé's Ten Days in Rio is a delight. Its structure perfectly re-enacts a visitor's sense of shuffled time and its language brings back the rich bounty of details proffered to the observant eye. But what drives the poem is the erotic hum as "Bernardie" and the unpredictable Maria do their pas de deux through Rio seen here beyond its postcard gloss. – Ricardo Sternberg
