This historical romance is set against the backdrop of carnage during the American Civil War. The letters of Cornelia Hancock, who served as a Civil War nurse from 1863 to the end of the war, inspired this fiction. Because Cornelia wanted to work near battlefields, she faced the severe criticism depicted in the story. She had remarkable adventures, but a woman of that era who publicized her accomplishments risked further condemnation. She destroyed personal correspondence with a young doctor who wanted to marry her, and the remaining letters were not published until years after her death. This short story is the fiction companion to the biography, A Soldier's Friend, Civil War Nurse Cornelia Hancock. If you enjoy "In Hospital and Camp," you will also want to read A Soldier's Friend.
