Because Cornelia wanted to work near battlefields, she faced the severe criticism depicted in the story. She had remarkable adventures, but a woman of that era who publicized her accomplishments risked further condemnation. She destroyed personal correspondence with a young doctor who wanted to marry her, and the remaining letters were not published until years after her death.
