It is said that Carson McCullers had initially planned to write a story about a girl who happens to be in love with her piano teacher, but she suddenly found something which compelled her to change it into a full length novel.

The story is set in the month of August 1944. The time is towards the end of the Second World War. Eventually, the war had ended the following summer.

The novel basically deals with the subject of war. Frankie is the young protagonist of the novel. Having gone through the war experiences, Frankie experiences personal growth as well.
