On Wednesday 10 April 1912, RMS Titanic left Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York. Four days later, half an hour before midnight, she struch an iceberg. By 2 am the last lifeboat had rowed frantically away. Then, within only twenty minutes, the great ship had sunk and 1,500 people had lost their lives.
