Today childhood obesity afflicts almost 2 out of every 10 kids, and the trend is projected to increase. Yet 40 years ago, back in the 1960’s, childhood obesity wasn’t a major headline or a national health problem. This week’s expert guests are both dedicated to solving this health crisis, but they go about it in very different ways. Our first guest, Dr. Daniel Kirschenbaum, is the clinical director and chief program officer of Wellspring Academies, which is a weight loss boarding school for kids and teens who are seriously obese and want to lose weight. Dr. Kirschenbaum explains the Wellspring approach and how they transform fat kids into thin kids with a “healthy obsession” as a new goal in life. Our second guest is Dr. Philip Rosenthal, an internationally renowned pediatric liver specialist at U.C. San Francisco’s Children’s Hospital, where he treats young people up to age 21. Dr. Rosenthal explains how overweight kids are at risk for liver disease and why chronic inflammation of the liver can lead to scarring and non-alcoholic cirrhosis. It’s stunning to learn that 5% of the overweight childhood population may be suffering from some form of liver disease. And host Karen Bentley gives the latest and greatest news from the Mayo Clinic about what every parent can do, now, today, to create a healthier family culture and to help overweight kids in a loving, compassionate, practical way.
