This week’s show is focused on teenage weight loss and eating disorders that tend to manifest during the teenage period of life. The teenage phase of life is a particularly self-conscious, body-conscious period. When girls enter puberty they go from 13% body fat to 27% body fat. And when boys enter puberty they go from 5% body fat to 11% body fat. For both genders, body fat doubles as part of the normal maturation process, yet this change in body shape can be very unsettling and difficult for teens to deal with. Our two expert guests are Anne Fletcher and Dr. Jane Shure. Anne Fletcher is a renowned nutritionist, registered dietician and NY Times bestselling author many times over. She’ll be talking about her book called Weight Loss Confidential: How Teens Lose Weight and Keep It Off and What They Wish their Parents Knew. You’ll not only hear about successful teen weight loss strategies, but also about highly effective healthy family eating practices. Anne has an upbeat, positive, practical message that every parent with an overweight teen should hear. Our second guest is Dr. Jane Shure, family therapist, psychotherapist and passionate eating disorders expert. Dr. Jane is on the board of directors of A CHANCE TO HEAL, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing eating disorders by increasing awareness about them. As with every kind of disease, early detection and correction are very important. Please stay tuned to hear about common eating disorder warning signs. Host Karen Bentley gives the latest and greatest scientific news from the September edition of the Nutrition Action Health Letter which compares the weight loss results from three different types of diets that were studied over a 2-year period. Karen also continues her spiritual solution series about loving yourself at any size. Today’s technique is the practice of self-care and how love of self is demonstrated by making yourself a priority in your own life.
