本书共设定了16个研究主题，包括当代回族的生计、语言、教育、伊斯兰教派门宦、伊斯兰文化译著、伊斯兰法文化、媒体文化、建筑文化?养生文化、服饰文化、饮食文化、人生礼俗、文学、音乐、美术和体育等，基本上涵盖了文化的主要内容。这部文化民族志的基本任务是通过田野调查发现和描述回族文化事实，在此基础上，还将进一步发现那些发生频度相对较高的事实(行为)，即发现"模式"。The book has 16 of research subjects, including livelihood, language, education of Hui Nationality, Islam religious sect, translation works of Islam culture, culture of Islamic law, media culture, building culture, culture of health preserving, dress culture, food culture, life rites, literature, music, art and sports and so on, which basically covers the main content of culture. The basic task of this cultural ethnography is to discover and describe the cultural facts through field investigation, and accordingly, it further discovers the facts (behaviors) that happen in relatively high frequency, i.e. to discover "mode".
