The "Deep Image" poetics of Bly is highly critical. He opposes the poetic principle of basing the modernism on the materialism or the objectivism (i.e. the western philosophy). He believed that the American modernistic poems have inherited American commercial culture and Puritanism tradition, which will seriously hamper the development of the national spirit. American poems have turned to a wrong direction—i.e. towards the outer world since the initial stage. That is to say, American poems have lost their core and path, and are doomed to linger on the object materials.
