AUGUST 2, 1990.
"Iraq's Army invaded the oil-rich nation of Kuwait today. President Saddam Hussein of Iraq justified the invasion of Kuwait by saying that Kuwait historically belongs to Iraq. Saddam said that Kuwait is the birthplace of Nabopollasar, the father of Nebuchadnezzar. Nebuchadnezzar is the founder of the Babylonian Empire. Babylon is today's modern Iraq. President Saddam Hussein said that the British should be blamed for the creation of the state of Kuwait, which Saddam said is Iraq's territory by historical right. The Iraqi leader said that he has annexed Kuwait as the seventeenth province of Iraq," Peter Jennings said on CNN International.
