The Call of the Ruru tells the story of a young, part-Maori woman called Ngaia. She journeys up to the Far North in New Zealand where she discovers romance, adventure, and ultimately her family roots.Part One introduces Ngaia, who as an investigative journalist, travels up North on an assignment. While there, she unwittingly becomes entangled in a sordid drug world.Part Two is the story of Ngaia's return journey to the Far North to find her father. In the remote town where her father lives, she encounters a mysterious newcomer to the community whose presence takes a sinister turn.Haunted by a vivid dream of an owl (Ruru), Ngaia learns to acknowledge the psychic gift that has been bestowed upon her by her ancestors.Above all, she learns the power of love.Throughout the novel, the descriptions of the New Zealand countryside and the native bush, are evocative of the landscapes unique beauty.
