Guru Har Krishan Sahib Ji was declared as Eighth Nanak Guru by his father Shri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji before his death in 1661. Ram Rai, the eldest son of Guru Har Rai Sahib, was inflamed with jealousy. He had long cherished a desire to be the next Guru of the Sikhs.

Ram Rai sought the audience of the Emperor Aurangzeb and complained to the Emperor against his father's decision.

The Emperor issued and order and through Raja Jai Singh summoned the young Guru to appear before him.
