Smashwords is a leading distributor of ebooks for indie authors. Putting ebooks on Smashwords.com results in sales—not just to Smashwords customers, but to customers for Apple, Sony, Kobo, etc. However, to be eligible to sell to these other customers, your ebook must be properly formatted and must have a hyperlinked table of contents. Smashwords has an 87-page formatting manual, but that can be hard to understand and use.
