The book describes the lives of the Holbrook family. It shows their struggle to survive during the 1920s. They happen to be a working class family.

The book also deals with the themes of motherhood, socioeconomic order, and pre-depression era. When the book was first published, it was published as an unfinished piece of writing.

According to the author, she had started writing this novel in March 1932. It was the same month she got pregnant with her first child.

It is said that Olsen's husband Jack found out the chapters, notes, and scraps of her writings among her old papers. She worked hard for two years and pieced the novel together in 1974.
