Cari Davis is an emotionally tattered, small town radio talk show host who has just been hired at a much larger station to do a traditional women's show, talking about food, fashion and celebrities. Ignoring her bosses, Cari relies on her often edgy and occasionally seductive style and quickly becomes the station's brightest star.
There is not much time to celebrate, though. A notoriously nasty consultant is setting up a competing talk station and has declared a "radio war." Cari's station is hit with a series of dirty tricks, some of which target Cari's personal life, subjecting her to defaced billboards, intimidating phone calls and the delivery of a ghastly package. The pressure on Cari intensifies when someone files an anonymous complaint alleging that a major on-air contest was rigged. The millionaire contest sponsor, with whom Cari had a brief affair, has turned against her and is secretly accusing Cari of being responsible. As evidence mounts against her, Cari's colleagues shun her and she faces the possibility of being fired, fined or even sent to prison.
Backed into an emotional corner, Cari warily accepts the help of a grizzled reporter who discovers that the millionaire and a local congressman are involved in a complex criminal enterprise. Cari gets a shocking warning that she may be murdered to keep her quiet. Reluctantly, she seeks comfort and advice from her older boss whom she fears is falling in love with her.
Cari, her boss and the newsman make a clandestine plan to reveal the criminal enterprise in a live broadcast—on their own radio station. But before the big story airs, a gunman breaks into Cari's bedroom at night and in an emotional standoff, she confronts him with her own weapon. Then the newsman is attacked.
Events rapidly unfold. There is a suicide. People disappear. There is a string of arrests. Nearly every assumption that Cari has made about her colleagues is proven wrong. And the man she thought was like all the other men who simply wanted to use her for sex? She's finally convinced he truly loves her. With death threats and fear of imprisonment behind her, Cari is now facing another big decision—will she allow herself to be vulnerable enough to love him back?
