"The White Devil" by English playwright John Webster first premiered in 1612. The play's premier proved to be a complete failure, very talked about notorious failure.
It is a revenge tragedy, which according to Webster was not appreciated by an unreceptive audience in the dead of winter when it first premiered.
It is a very complex play, full of sophistication. The contemporary satire did not bring it the admiration that it deserved. However, when it was revived in 139 by Queen Henrietta's Men at the Cockpit, it proved to be very successful. It was greatly admired by both audiences and critics.
