Ramdas Ji was a virtuous man, with considerable merit. He was full of devotion, piety, energy, and eloquence. Guru Amardas Sahib Ji tested him on several occasions, and Ramdas Ji successfully passed all the tests.

Guru Amardas Sahib Ji was pleased with Ramdas and he found him capable in every respect and worthy of the office of Guruship. Guru Amardas Sahib Ji announced Ramdas Sahib Ji the Fourth Nanak on 1st of September, 1574.

Having become the Fourth Guru of the Sikhs, Shri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji laid the foundation stone of Ramdas Pur, a town which is now known as Amritsar, the holiest city for the followers of Sikhism.
