The book was first published in 1955 in Paris, and then it was published in New York in 1958. It was originally written in Russian language, but it was later translated into English by Vladimir Nabokov himself.

For several decades the novel remained in discussion among literary circles all over the world for its controversial subject.

Professor Humbert Humbert, about 38 years old, is the protagonist and unreliable narrator of the novel. He is obsessed with the 12 year old Dolores Haze. The professor becomes sexually involved with that girl after he becomes her stepfather. The private name of Dolores is "Lolita."
